In a place like Litomyšl, where every detail of public space is addressed with respect for its historical legacy, we successfully negotiated the placement of a PPL Parcel Box directly within the buffer zone of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even here, logistics can function in a way that is sensitive, purposeful, and in harmony with its surroundings.
An exceptional place calls for strict rules
Litomyšl is one of the most significant historic towns in the Czech Republic, and its core is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As such, there are strict rules for introducing any new elements into public spaces – including parcel boxes. The city requires that all additions fit both the urban and architectural context.
A PPL box close to Lidl that respects its surroundings
Our PPL box was installed next to a Lidl supermarket on Sokolovská Street, in close proximity to a protected Baroque granary that once belonged to the former manor estate “Pernštýn.” The location was carefully chosen: Lidl was built here based on an architectural competition, and its building reflects an emphasis on aesthetics – wooden paneling, a green roof, and minimal advertising. In this setting, the PPL Parcel Box fits naturally and causes no visual disruption.
Thanks to its understated grey wrap and discreet placement against the wall behind a wooden fence, the box respects the spatial composition of the site. It simply complements the area’s function – it’s a frequented location that’s easily accessible to local residents.
Dialogue, cooperation, respect
The final placement of the box was the result of an open collaboration between PPL, the town of Litomyšl, the supermarket operator, and local designers. It was essential to find common ground and show that a parcel box could serve both residents and visitors – without compromising the historical context of the location.
“In historic Litomyšl, nothing is left to chance – every detail in the public space is carefully evaluated. That’s why we deeply value the opportunity to install a PPL Parcelbox right within the UNESCO protection zone. It proves that modern logistics and cultural heritage can go hand in hand – when design is driven by dialogue and a sensitive approach,” says Michaela Machovcová, PPL’s Network Development Manager for pick-up and drop-off points.
A step toward sustainable delivery and services
Even in sensitive environments, pick-up box delivery makes sense. This method helps reduce traffic in city centers, allows people to pick up their parcels at any time, and saves both energy and resources. Litomyšl proves that smart logistics do not have to come at the expense of cultural heritage – if they’re designed thoughtfully and respectfully.
With respect for the place and the rules
Each PPL box is installed based on clear, meaningful criteria shared by all stakeholders. We believe that placement must always be carefully considered – with respect for the space, its residents, our customers, technical infrastructure, and the site’s history. At PPL, we follow the principle “quality over quantity” and take all these aspects into account. That’s why we’ve published our PPL Parcelbox Placement Guidelines, which we have followed strictly for several years now.
We believe that respectful delivery solutions have a rightful place – especially in areas where visual aesthetics and meaningful public space matter most.
